Famous for being a well-loved children’s Danish TV show character, Hugo the troll takes the main stage in this game. Play n’ GO has brought this charming troll back to life and spread him all over the world, keeping the franchise alive and kicking.

Game Background

This game takes us back to an unexpected place – the 1990s to meet a Danish TV character. It outlines the story of a funny-looking troll on a mission to find safety from the evil witch Afsyklia.

Appropriately enough, Hugo represents the wild symbol joined by the other symbols which include treasure chests, bags of gold, dynamite and pick axes – all symbols from the TV show.

The fun part is in the bonus features which include free spins with multipliers and a treasure chest mini game. Altogether these features suggest that you could be looking at quite the generous payout.

Hits & Misses

We’ve had a tough time finding something to complain about with Hugo. The slot is just what it makes itself out to be and all our expectations were met.

The game is very simple, and this might not be such a bad thing. If you’re up for a game that’s not overly visually stimulating, clean and easy to follow, this might be just the one for you.

We think the lower-value symbols: 10, J, Q, K and A, could have been represented by a more elaborate illustration, but realise we might just be nit-picking. On the plus side, having them represented by letters makes it easier to distinguish between higher value and lower value symbols in the game.

Slots Design & Layout

The graphics are sweet and the layout is not overwhelming, accompanied by some pleasant music. The overall design follows the typical layout of an online slot game, with all the controls being marked clearly at the bottom.

There are four high value symbols to be found in this slot. These are illustrated by a gold nugget, explosives, a bag of gold and a pick axe. Lower value symbols include the letters J, Q, K and A as well as the number 10 – fairly standard.

We’re glad to say this video slot is available for most mobile devices as well as on desktop. Since the slot is uncomplicated to begin with, it translates very well on mobile with very few compromises, and is just the type of game you would want to take on the go.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

The game starts off with a railway track leading us to a mine, followed by an explosion, after which we meet our grinning protagonist. Due to the simplicity of this game, you don’t need to have any intimate knowledge on how to play slots in order to master this one quickly. You can choose to spin the reels yourself, or else kick back and watch the game run in autoplay.

Unsurprisingly, the friendly troll, Hugo, acts as the Wilds symbol in this slot. If you’re fortunate enough to encounter this wild as part of your winning combination, not only will it replace any symbol but will also double your win. All symbols except bonus and scatter can be substituted by this wild.

The scatter symbol takes the form of a witch called Afskylia. If you manage to score three of these symbols, you will trigger the Free Spins feature which allows you to pick the amount of free spins you wish to start with: 5, 10 or 15.

Your choice comes at a cost, however. Although you get a 3x multiplier if you choose 5 free spins, the multiplier goes down to x2 if you pick 10 spins, and 15 spins won’t give you any multiplier at all.

Another bonus is the Treasure Bonus, triggered when three treasure chests come up on odd-numbered reels. This unlocks the entry to the mine introduced in the beginning of the game, and you will have a choice to make between some doors. If you choose the right one, you will be taken to another set of doors, and so on. Every time you pick the right door, you will be rewarded – but look out for the crocodile who will immediately disqualify you.

The maximum payout for this slot is 100,000 coins, which we think is pretty good compared to other games of its kind.

The Return-To-Player percentage is 96.40% which is fairly standard, albeit on the lower end. The volatility for the game is medium, which leads us to expect a more balanced game.

The minimum bet is set at 0.10, which translates to only 0.01 per line, giving everyone a chance to bet regardless of budget. Your bet can go up to 100 at a time if you play up to five coins at a value of two each line.

Overall Verdict?

Overall the game is incredibly playable. Even if you’re not familiar with the troll, you won’t be missing out on much apart from the nostalgia factor.

Getting familiar with the game is effortless, but this doesn’t mean it gets boring. The mood is just right to get you hooked, keep you going and provide some decent game time.
