5 Unsolved Casino Mysteries

Beyond the glitz and glamour that is promised to those who pay a visit to a land-based casino, there’s also occasionally a darker undercurrent that lies beneath it all. Over the years, many disappearances, murder cases and heists have occurred in different casinos all over the world. We decided to investigate some of these dark tales…

1. The Bill Brennan Heist

On September 22, 1992, Bill Brennan managed to walk out with $507,361 in stolen money and chips while he worked at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It is believed that he was successful due to the fact that he observed the security systems thoroughly, to avoid getting caught on the surveillance footage.

Brennan wasn’t one to cause trouble but he started acting differently after the management refused to promote him for spending his time with a shady bettor at the casino.

Interestingly enough, that same bettor also disappeared a few months after Brennan’s heist, which lead the authorities to speculate whether the two orchestrated this master plan together and split the goods.

2. The Murder of Jodie Bordeaux

Disaster struck on November 21, 1997 when Jodie Bordeaux was shot in the head by an unknown attacker who fired bullets at the farmhouse she was living in with her husband Shawn.

While it’s believed that there were many suspects linked to Jodie’s murder, her husband thinks that someone at the Golden Eagle Casino was responsible for her death. Considering the fact that this was a native-owned casino, many employees weren’t too happy with Jodie’s recent promotion, since she wasn’t a Native American. Days before her murder, she also received anonymous threatening phone calls. The case remains unsolved till today.

3. The Murder of Sonny Liston

Boxing icon Sonny Liston was found murdered in his home in Las Vegas a few days before the New Year in 1970. Although the authorities issued an official statement where they believed that cause of death was an accidental drug overdose, others thought there was far more to the story. After a career of 50 wins before losing several fights to Muhammad Ali in the 60s, America’s anti-hero got himself into fights and spent his days frequenting the Las Vegas casinos.

It’s speculated that the boxer became involved in a loan shark ring, and was punished by his bosses after he refused to fight Chuck Wepner internationally. This guy’s a bit of a mystery, with underworld connections and even no recorded date of birth, and to many, his death was certainly no accident.

4. The Disappearance of Trevor Angell

While working as a truck driver in 2000, Trevor Angell set off on trip between Los Angeles and Canada. At some point, he spoke to his wife claiming that he hadn’t slept in four days and was planning on quitting the business after delivering this one last load.

Days later, Angell’s empty wallet was discovered on the front seat after his truck was found abandoned at Whiskey Pete’s Hotel and Casino in Nevada. His ATM card had been used to withdraw his pay cheque, nine times in a row.

It is thought that Angell staged his own disappearance after witnesses claim that Angell was seen in the car park looking sick that same day that he went missing.

5. The Murder of Gail Ann Thompson

On May 3, 1996, Gail Anne Thompson wanted to stay a little longer at the Jackpot Casino in Nevada, while her husband and their friends went up to bed. Nevertheless, she never returned to the hotel room.

She was found her with throat cut and her head was bashed with an unknown object. There were many discrepancies linked to this case, including the fact that her husband didn’t seem too bothered about Gail’s murder. The case remains unsolved, since Bobby died in 2000 and took any secrets with him to his grave.
