It’s Talk Like A Pirate Day, and we’re celebrating by looking at some of the most famous, badass pirates from history. These pirates ruled the seven seas, and some of them continue to rule in both movies and slots to this day. Five Pirates We Wouldn’t Want To Meet Out At Sea

1. Sir Francis Drake, The Knighted Pirate

This English “pirate” was actually more of a privateer than a pirate. Lovingly nicknamed “my pirate” by Queen Elizabeth I, Francis sailed the seven seas attacking Spanish ships. All in the name of the English government. During his most famous time at sea he sailed the globe, lost most of his boats, raided ports and dealt with mutiny attempts.

Basically, during his time at sea he lived a real-life pirate movie! At one point he even captured a Spanish ship filled with treasure, which of course went into the pockets of the English government, since he wasn’t your everyday “sea dog”. Once he returned he wasn’t treated like a pirate at all. No, instead he was knighted by the queen and later went on to help defeat the Spanish armada!

2. Benjamin Hornigold – Blackbeard’s Mentor And The Most Chill Pirate Ever

Most people know Blackbeard, one of the most famous pirates of all time (at least if we leave out Hollywood pirates), but just as many wouldn’t know of Hornigold. Though he was the one who practically raised Blackbeard into the infamous pirate he became.

Starting from scratch and building his way up to power, Hornigold turned a few canoes into a massive warship. Once he built his big force, however, this pirate king kind of chilled out a bit. After all, the large 30-gun ship made pillaging and looting other ships quite easy. So sometimes he would pillage just for the sake of it.

At one time he even took over a merchant ship only to steal their hats! Before letting the baffled merchant crew go on with their business without stealing anything else he told them that his pirates had gotten drunk the night before and lost their hats!

3. Jean Lafitte – Doubling Down On The Rewards

A somewhat well-known character in American history, this French pirate king was a big fan of America and especially the south. Jean’s base wasn’t just a ship but an entire island in Louisiana where he ran his smuggling operation whilst capturing ships. Of course, the governor of Louisiana wasn’t all that much of a fan of the French pirate.

At one point the governor even offered a $300 reward on Jean Lafitte’s head, which back then was a lot of money, promising that anyone who captured the pirate could claim the money. However, the pirate king wasn’t bothered. No, instead he responded by offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who captured the governor!

4. Edward Teach – The World’s Most Famous Pirate?

Known as Blackbeard, this famous pirate has been the topic of many movies and books, though he really only ruled the seas for two years! Known mainly for his long beard, decorated with smoking fuses and the many pistols slung across his chest.

After capturing a large French slave ship, he decked it out with a lot more firepower. After pillaging and looting for two years, he took over a port town in America, demanding a chest full of medicine. The town people were forced to give into his demands, but Blackbeard was still not safe as he was chased away by the navy, forcing him to go into hiding before finally meeting his end.

He might sound like your “average pirate”, but what really makes this guy legendary is that he really went down fighting! According to the story, Blackbeard was stabbed a total of 20 times and shot five times before he finally died.

5. Francois l’Olonnais – The Pirate Version Of The Heart Break Kid?

Ok, so he might have been a bit more terrifying than that. After all, Francois at one point ate a man’s heart! After narrowly escaping an ambush by Spanish soldiers off the coast of Venezuela, the former farmer-turned-pirate got away with a handful of his men and some Spanish hostages.

Not knowing which direction to travel to avoid the wrath of even more Spanish forces, Francois didn’t just ask his newly acquired prisoners for directions. After all manners maketh man, not pirate. No, the anti-Spaniard pirate instead drew his sword, sliced into a hostage’s chest and pulled out his heart! As if this wasn’t enough to make the rest willingly talk, he started to eat the heart, telling the rest of the hostages that they were next if they didn’t show him the way to safety.

Personally, we don’t recommend this method if you’re asking for directions, but according to the story it worked for Francois.
